IN a first of its kind for Mutare, the Manicaland capital will host an international boxing gala, thanks to a partnership between Zimbabwe boxing icon Charles Manyuchi and the local municipality.

Eager to promote the sweet science sport in the Eastern Highlands, Mutare City Council went to bed with Manyuchi, who now runs a boxing stable, after a colourful career that saw him reach the top echelons of world boxing.

An international boxing tournament will be held at Mutare Sports Club on May 23.
Several international boxers from Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia will be in action against some local top pugilists.

Zambian female star boxer Lolita Muzeya is part of a cast that also has the likes of Mbachi Kaonga, also from Zimbabwe’s northern neighbours.

Manyuchi made his name in Zambia hence the strong presence of boxers from that country.

“All is set now and we are happy to announce that we will finally be hosting an international boxing tournament in Mutare.
“This is a first of its kind for Mutare,” Manyuchi said.

Some boxers from the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy expected to light up the night include Evans “Vanso” Husaihwevhu and John Andrew who is based in Chivhu.
Jeremiah “Jingo” Mhere from the Mau Mau stable, Patience Masitara and Lawrence Chiyangwa are also on the bout card.

“We want to promote boxing in all the four corners of the country,” said Manyuchi, a former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion.

“I did my part as a boxer now I have to promote upcoming talent.”
