“It feels good, obviously. It’s been quite a while.
“And I think I’m also happy to see my brothers, my friends, and my teammates,” said Marshall Munetsi on Friday, in his first interview since his recall to the national team.
After seven months in national team football exile, highly rated Zimbabwean midfielder is finally back in the set up and has declared himself ready to serve his country again.
Still on loan at French Ligue 1 side FC Paris, Munetsi will likely start for the Warriors when they play Nigeria in the Unity Cup semifinal at The Valley in London on May 26.
The 29-year-old versatile midfielder has not featured for Zimbabwe since October 13, 2025 due to some political reasons.
Munetsi was reportedly accused of criticizing the national football association over player welfare.
That is all now water under the bridge.
“I think we all have a goal now, you know, as we have some important games coming up.
“And I think I’m looking forward to the games and I’m looking forward to representing my country as always,” added Munetsi.
He is part of the Warriors squad in England for the Unity Cup which will run from May 26-30.
Jamaica and India are also featuring.
The winner from the match between Zimbabwe and Nigeria will face either Jamaica or India.
Zimbabwe coach Kaitano Tembo has called up a squad with new faces including Scottland FC star midfielder Abubakar Moffat.
Barnsley attacking midfielder Tawanda Chirewa as well as Warriors skipper Marvelous Nakamba are also part of the team.
“I think we have some new young guys coming in, some fresh faces.
“And I think it’s a good opportunity for us to get to know each other.
“Obviously, these two games are important, but what we’re looking for is also to prepare for the AFCON qualifiers that are coming up,” said Munetsi.
He added: “So I think it’s just, you know, nurturing the talent and assisting wherever we can, because I think I’m one of the senior guys in the team.
“So it’s good to know the young faces.
“You know, you always watch most of them playing here in Europe.
“The first thing is that they should know that it can rain and it can be cold and the pitches are quite different.
“But also the most important thing is for them to showcase their talent.
“There will be a lot of teams and scouts that are coming in to look at how Zimbabwe is performing.
“Also because some of us are playing here, they want to see how we’re performing as a country.”
Munetsi is on loan at Paris FC and is expected to return to Wolves at the closure of the 2025-2026 season.
Unfortunately, Wolves have been relegated from the English Premier League.
But, for now, Munetsi is focused on playing for his country.
“We have Nigeria first, you know, so I think everyone will be looking forward to that game.
“And also just to, you know, be proud of representing Zimbabwe.
“We’re starting on a clean slate,” he said.
Zimbabwe are using the Unity Cup to also fine tune their squad ahwad of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which begin in September.
The Warriors were drawn in Group E alongside Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone and World Cup bound DR Congo.
And Munetsi believes the Unity Cup will be a key tournament.
He wants Zimbabweans based in England to come and support the Warriors.
“We have two games coming up and I think they (fans) should support us in their numbers, especially for the ones in the
UK.
“You know, I think this is probably the second time Zimbabwe has played in Europe.
‘So I think this is a good opportunity.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” added Munetsi.
