Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League champions Scottland will face South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in the 2026 Toyota Cup after being officially unveiled as Amakhosi’s opponents during a live broadcast on SABC 1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Toyota Cup, launched to strengthen football ties across the continent, has quickly become one of the most anticipated pre-season fixtures in Southern Africa.

Toyota South Africa Motors Chief Executive Officer Andrew Kirby said Scottland’s rapid rise made them the ideal opponents for Chiefs.

“We see in Scottland a club that is ready to take football to another level. Their ambition, growth and achievements in a short period have been impressive,” said Kirby during the unveiling.

He said the partnership between the two clubs would benefit football development in both countries.

“We believe this relationship with Kaizer Chiefs will go a long way in developing the game, not only in South Africa and Zimbabwe but across the region,” he said.

The high-profile encounter will add another chapter to the growing relationship between the two clubs and comes just weeks after Kaizer Chiefs chairman and businessman Kaizer Motaung visited Zimbabwe, where he met Scottland owner and Mabvuku-Tafara legislator Scott Sakupwanya.

The meeting fuelled speculation about closer ties between the clubs, with Tuesday’s announcement providing the clearest indication yet of a strengthening football relationship across the Limpopo.

The announcement sets up a high-profile regional showdown and will also mark an emotional return for Zimbabwean stars Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona, who are expected to come up against their former club for the first time since joining Scottland.

Billiat remains one of Kaizer Chiefs’ most celebrated former players after spending five seasons at Naturena, while Musona also enjoyed two spells with the Soweto giants and remains a fan favourite among the Amakhosi faithful.

Musona, affectionately known as “The Smiling Assassin”, first joined Chiefs in 2009 before returning for a second stint in 2014, while Billiat became a key figure for Amakhosi after his move from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018.
