Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza has reaffirmed that representing Zimbabwe remains his highest priority, saying he will continue to honour his commitment to national duty even when it means missing lucrative franchise cricket opportunities.
Speaking in an interview with https://wccc.co.uk/, Raza explained that his decision to leave English county side Worcestershire for Zimbabwe’s international assignments was driven by a promise he made to Zimbabwe Cricket and the country’s supporters.
The experienced all-rounder admitted it was disappointing to miss a crucial stage of Worcestershire’s Vitality Blast campaign, but insisted wearing Zimbabwe colours remains “the ultimate honour.”
“Sadly but I hold my international commitments with Zimbabwe especially very high,” said Raza.
“I made a promise with them that I’ll not miss a white-ball game. When it comes to Test cricket I’ll play whatever fixtures you have, half of it, because I think it will be very difficult for me to play eight to 10 Test matches or six Test matches in a year.”
Raza revealed that he had reached an understanding with Zimbabwe Cricket regarding his availability for the longer format.
“I said I’ll be available for three of them, but to see the team win suddenly without me makes me happy as well.”
Zimbabwe recently enjoyed success in Test cricket in Raza’s absence, a development the veteran said filled him with pride as it demonstrated the team’s growing strength.
Despite the demands of an increasingly crowded global cricket calendar and the growing number of franchise leagues, Raza said he remains committed to fulfilling his promise to Zimbabwe.
“Since I made that promise with the Zimbabwe Cricket Board and the fans that I’ll not miss a white-ball game, as much as it’s sad, I’m actually happy that I’m going to represent my country, which is for me the ultimate honour.”
Raza’s comments come at a time when international cricket continues to compete with lucrative franchise leagues for the services of leading players.
His stance reinforces his long-standing commitment to Zimbabwe, where he has become one of the national team’s most influential performers across all formats.
The all-rounder is expected to join the Zimbabwe squad for their upcoming white-ball international assignments as the Chevrons continue preparations for a busy international schedule.
