Sports Reporter

Harare Polytechnic student Linda Dalitso Shaba raised the Zimbabwean flag high as she won gold at the 2022 African Amateur Individual Chess Championship held in Mombasa Kenya.

Shaba, a Zimbabwe Ladies national team player scooped gold in the Ladies U2000-2300 after amassing eight points out of a possible nine having played one round less after encountering travel complications ahead of her trip.

She managed to shrug off competition from Kenyan opponent Madelta Glenda in her quest to earn a ticket to the World Amateur Chess Championships penciled for next year as she gained 33.5 FIDE Elo rating points.

The 25-year-old was delighted after reaching great heights and gave credit to her sponsors and coach who made the trip possible.

“It was not easy going to Kenya and doing what I did”. I’m happy to add this regional achievement to my list of achievements and am sure it will spur me to achieve more in the future,” said Shaba.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation Women’s Chess Director Fungirayiini Mushaninga described Shaba win as well deserved win.

“Well done Linda! I know that such a splendid performance never comes to those in comfort zones. It is through hardwork, perseverance, determination and lots of sacrifice.
“As ladies, we are proud of you for lifting our country’s flag higher. Always know we are behind you,” said Mushaninga.
