The Lady Chevrons’ historic entry into the elite tier of women’s cricket was met with a sobering reality check on Thursday, as Zimbabwe fell to a commanding 180-run defeat against New Zealand in their ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) debut at the University of Otago Oval.

After winning the toss Zimbabwe sent the hosts to bat first.

New Zealand produced an excellent display with the bat, scoring a massive 354 for 3 in their 50 overs to set Zimbabwe a very difficult target.

While the match marked a monumental milestone for Zimbabwe Cricket—becoming the 11th nation to join the expanded 2025-2029 Championship cycle—the gap between the debutants and the reigning T20 World Cup champions was laid bare in a one-sided contest.

The home side was led by a brilliant unbeaten century from Brooke Halliday, who scored 157 runs from 118 balls, hitting 24 fours and one six.

She shared an important partnership with wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze, who also impressed with 59 not out from 42 deliveries.

Earlier, Maddy Green contributed 67 runs, while Emma McLeod added 35 and captain Amelia Kerr chipped in with 15 runs.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers tried to fight back but found it difficult to slow down the scoring. Precious Marange and Christabel Chatonzwa each picked up one wicket, while captain Nomvelo Sibanda and the rest of the bowling attack struggled against the strong New Zealand batting line-up.

In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 174 in 47.3 overs. Kelis Ndhlovu was the top scorer with 52 runs, while Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano made 39 and Beloved Biza added 29.

However, the rest of the batting order could not build strong partnerships.

New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr led the bowling attack with four wickets, while Jessica Kerr took three wickets as New Zealand secured a comfortable victory and took a 1–0 lead in the ODI series.
